Abstract

Several radioprotective and antitoxic preparations have been developed using modern biotechnology methods. Among them are recombinant cytokines (colony-stimulating factors and interleukin-1) and bacterial-derived immunomodulators stimulating innate immunity and endogenous cytokine synthesis (flagellin). Clinical trials show that recombinant human interleukin-1 beta decreases leucopenia duration in the patients receiving high-dose anticancer radio- and chemotherapy, thus leading to hematopoietic reconstitution. Complex medicines based on the combination of hematopoietic cytokines (IL-1) and free oxygen blockers, for instance superoxide dismutase, could be used in order to increase reconstitution effectiveness after radiation exposure.
