Abstract

Using Raman spectroscopy the role of carotenoids in irradiation (UV and α-particles) of inbred line seeds (zpl 225) and maize hybrid (zp 341) (Zea mays L.) has been investigated. It has been found that irradiation of seeds in the grain base region (exposure to α-particles of high energies, but not UV) changes the functional state of the plant, by changing the conformation of the carotenoid molecule of the seeds upon transition from the 15-cis to the all-trans state, rather than fluctuations of the C = C and C–C bonds of the polyene chain of the carotenoid molecule.
