Abstract

Data are presented on the content of tritium in the snow cover of the areas around underground nuclear explosions. It has been revealed that the cavities of underground nuclear explosions are potential sources of tritium entering the environment. Depending on the type and power of the nuclear test, the levels and nature of the tritium distribution in the snow cover are significantly different. In the near-well areas of boreholes 1355, 1010 and 1087, the concentration of tritium in the surface layer of the snow cover reaches 70 Bq/kg, while the tritium background concentrations for this area are below the level of 10 Bq/kg. It has been established that in the places where nuclear tests are conducted, the main mechanism for the introduction of tritium into the snow cover is the emanation from the soil.
