Abstract

Regularities are studied in the formation and elimination of γH2AX/53ВР1 radiation-induced foci (RIF) in human fibroblasts, which reflect the process of the induction and repair of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) after exposure to 60Co γ-rays and accelerated 11B and 20Ne ions with the energies of 8.1 and 46.6 MeV/nucleon and linear energy transfer (LET) of 138 and 132 keV/μm, respectively. It has been found that as compared with γ-rays, accelerated heavy ions induce a greater number of foci. Dose dependences of the RIF formation have been obtained. A deviation from a linear character of the dose dependence of the foci formation frequency has been observed at high doses. It is shown that in the case of heavy ions, the highest yield of γH2AX/53ВР1 foci is reached faster and their elimination kinetics is slower as compared with γ-rays. The kinetics of the γH2AX/53ВР1 foci formation and elimination is discussed as a possible marker of the DNA DSB induction and repair kinetics.
