Abstract

In the course of 12 years of observations (2003-2014), the frequency of cytogenetic alterations in the root meristem of Scots pine seedlings from chronically exposed sites in Bryansk region affected as a result of the Chernobyl accident statistically significantly exceeded the control level. In reference populations, the frequencies of cytogenetic abnormalities change with time in a cyclic fashion. In chronically exposed populations, the cyclic patterns in temporal dynamics of cytogenetic abnormalities are disturbed. Thus, even relatively low levels of chronic radiation exposure can increase cytogenetic variability and disrupt inherent patterns of self-development in the affected populations.
