Abstract

We have studied the effect of a prolonged exposure to the magnetic field of industrial frequency (IF MP 50 Hz, 4 hr/day, 5 days a week, 26 days) and of the external gamma-irradiation dose of 1.0 Gy and their combined effects on the blood and reproductive system of male rats. The action of experimental factors leads to a significant leukopenia. A falling number of monocytes and granulocytes is more pronounced in the initial period (the third day). The reaction of the reproductive system of male rats on the acting factors is manifested in the accelerated initial stages of spermatogenesis and an increased number of round spermatids; however, the number of subsequent transformation stages of spermatids is significantly reduced. The effect of MP IF (50 Hz) and irradiation at a dose of 1.0 Gy (single and combined) on epididymal spermаtozoa is expressed in a significant drop in their number and viability, remarkable apoptotic and necrotic cell death, changes of activity of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and acrosin. In most cases, a synergistic interaction of prolonged exposure to MP IF (50 Hz) and irradiation at a dose of 1.0 Gy was revealed, which causes the expressed disturbances in the properties of epididymal spermatozoa. A significant deterioration in their quality under the influence of the studied extreme factors has a clear negative impact on the fertility of animals, which is especially significant at the combined exposure.
